The Selection Process
UBC Family Practice Residency Program only accepts applications through the Canadian Residents Matching Service (CaRMS) .
One Program – Many Sites
The selection of residents at our Family Medicine Residency program is a central process. All applications are administered centrally and will be scored based on common criteria and standards. Your file may be reviewed by faculty from any site regardless of which site you apply to. You need to apply to each UBC residency site that you are interested in; however, your file will only be reviewed once, no matter how many sites you apply to. Therefore make sure you assign the same set of documents to each application. All application materials must be sent to the CaRMS office. Documents sent to our program office will not be considered.

FMProC: New requirement for 2024
The University of British Columbia Family Medicine Program is very excited to be part of FM Residency Programs to use the Family Medicine Professional Choices Assessment (FMProC), which is a Family Medicine context-specific Situational Judgement Test.
Applicants must upload FMProC result letter to CaRMS for your application to be considered complete.
Registration to sit the test will be open from September 2o, 2023 to October 25, 2023. This is a hard deadline and no late registration requests will be accommodated.

Letters of Recommendation
You must submit three Family Medicine Structured Reference Letter. Reference letters should speak to an interest in Family Medicine and aptitude for the discipline. Please ask that the letter to be as complete as possible, providing evidence of attributes and abilities well suited for a career in Family Medicine.
Traditional narrative reference letters will not be accepted.
Please submit the reference letters directly to CaRMS. We will not be able to process any documents that are sent to our office.
Biographical Summary (Personal Letter)
UBC has a centralized admissions process requiring only one personal letter regardless of the number of sites/streams you apply to.
Provide a biographical letter (max. 750 words) that includes answers to the following questions:
1. Why do you want to choose Family Medicine as a career? What makes you a good fit for this career choice?
2. What life skills or experience do you have that demonstrate your suitability for family medicine residency training?
3. Why UBC? Why British Columbia? Elaborate on any connections you might have with the province of B.C.
Elective
An elective during fourth year medicine in Family Medicine either in BC or elsewhere, completed before the match, is not required for application to UBC Family Medicine. Candidates who have not been able to arrange Family Medicine electives prior to the CaRMS match will not be adversely affected in our ranking process.
Interview
Applicants will be contacted by the program via email. UBC vitual interviews will be held on February 06-13, 2023. Applicants will be able to complete their interviews at any time during this interview period. Interviews must be completed in one sitting.
Ranking process
Selection is based on file review and one set of MMI interviews. Each file is reviewed and given a score. This file review score determines whether a candidate is offered an interview. The file review score is then combined with the interview score to create a total score for each applicant.
Additional Information
Applicants from Quebec where teaching or patient care is done in French will be required to demonstrate that they fulfill the English Language Proficiency requirements as per the Language Requirements section of the eligibility criteria for British Columbia. Please refer to College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC’s licensing requirement for details.
Students with a blood borne illness may not be allowed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC to undertake training in certain specialty areas with frequent numbers of exposure prone procedures. Medical students with a blood borne illness are advised to discuss their specific situation, and potential specialty career choice, with the Postgraduate Dean.
